NEWBURGH – While officials of the Port Authority and New York Stewart International Airport continue their efforts to grow passenger service at the Newburgh area facility, Stewart is destined to be the “cargo hub of the Northeast,” according to a report from Hudson Valley Pattern for Progress.

The think-tank’s President, Jonathan Drapkin, said the cargo hub would be designed with the future of freight logistics in mind, one that is more automated, computerized, and uses high tech facilities for the movement of cargo.

“There will be less jobs, but the jobs will pay a higher wage and if you cluster them around Stewart Airport, you shouldn’t have as much animosity from neighbors. It will also lead to, if there are more flights, other jobs such as mechanics and people that work on the planes,” he said.

Pattern notes Stewart has “excess capacity for planes and plenty of space to handle the cargo.”

The non-profit organization envisions a training center for the new jobs, a shuttle service to the cities of Middletown and Newburgh for enhanced employment opportunities as well as workforce housing on-site.
