KEYNOTE SPEAKER:
Josh is a leader in the revitalization of historic commercial districts and senior economic development strategist at The Lakota Group. He uses local data to craft market-based strategies that help cities and communities build economically differentiated, dynamic places. He also has deep interest in social enterprise and community-owned businesses. He is a board member and past president of Weavers Way Cooperative, a $35 million retailer in Philadelphia with three grocery stores, a pet supplies store, two health-and-beauty-aid stores, and a “Mercantile” gift shop.
Josh co-led the National Main Street Center’s “Main Street Refresh” initiative, a national redesign and relaunch of the Main Street revitalization model, including pilots in Detroit; Lexington, KY; Miami; Philadelphia; and three small Colorado communities.
Josh began his career in revitalization as the downtown manager in South Orange, NJ, his hometown. Later, as a program officer at the National Main Street Center, he led the Center’s urban expansion efforts, establishing Boston Main Streets, the nation’s first citywide Main Street initiative.
Josh received his B.A. from Columbia University and a master’s in historic preservation from the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a graduate of the preservation carpentry program at the North Bennet Street School, a historic trades school in Boston.

City of Kingston – Mayor Steve Noble – Mayor Noble will share the city’s ongoing transition to a form-based code, along with the successful development of an urban trail network for jogging, biking and walking throughout the city.
Port Jervis Community Development Agency – Valerie Maginsky – Valerie will explain the active role that Port Jervis government played in the adaptive re-use of two downtown anchors after those buildings fell into disrepair and ended up being owned by the city.
City of Beacon – Mayor Lee Kyriacou – Mayor Kyriacou will share some of the key zoning changes that unlocked the development potential of Beacon’s main street.
Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce – Jaime Schmeiser – Jaime will share how Sullivan County’s largest village created a new event in its downtown and attracted more than 10,000 people…all for the love of bagels.
Saugerties Chamber of Commerce – Peggy Schwartz – Peggy will show how small, locally crafted statuettes created a unique sense of place in this village where the Catskills meet the Hudson.
City of Middletown – Maria Bruni – Learn how Middletown created and maintained a business improvement district(BID) to improve the good function and attractiveness of its downtown.
Village of Ossining – Village Manager Karen D’Attore – Learn how Ossining used its own staff to carefully outline plans and projects that yielded its successful application to New York State’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) in 2021.
