In preparation for the coming Thanksgiving holiday many people are stocking up on groceries. Overall grocery prices are up in part due to interruptions to the supply chain and the inflation rate of 5.7 % over the last year. Turkey prices are especially high at $20.15 for a 16 lb. turkey this year which is a 18% increase since last year. In the last ten years turkey prices were highest in 2015 when a 16 lb. bird cost $20.68. Low income households feel the pinch of higher grocery prices the most. For a household living on an annual budget of $30,000 for example, even a 5% increase in the price of food can be a huge strain on household budgets. Food insecurity is an issue for thousands of households in the Hudson Valley region. If you are able, consider making a donation to the Food Bank of the Hudson Valley or your local food pantry this year.
