A large portion of Hudson Valley households do not own a vehicle.  Westchester County has the highest percent of vehicle-less households at 14%.  With a robust public transportation system, Westchester may also be the easiest place to live without a vehicle. In more rural places like Greene County or Columbia County, not having a vehicle may severely limit work opportunities, and for some households that do not have a private car, it is crucial that housing is within walking distance of job opportunities.  There are many reasons a household might not own a private vehicle but the most common is the high financial cost of car ownership.
