Fall pumpkin and apple picking are popular activities in the Hudson Valley. However, in the region’s nine counties the number of acres dedicated to popular produce items like apples is dwindling. The acreage for apples declined by 39% between 2010 and 2020. In the same period acreage for pumpkins has actually increased growing by 24%. Most of the increase was in Orange County which had 27 acres of land for pumpkin growing in 2010 and 90 acres dedicated to growing this large squash in 2020.
