Dutchess County contains communities ranging from rural to suburban to urban. Similar to Columbia County, population density is generally higher in the western parts of the county and lower density in the eastern parts with the Taconic Parkway splitting the county between east and west. Population density is highest in the cities of Poughkeepsie and Beacon. Population density is also high along the heavily developed commercial corridor along Route 9 between Beacon and Poughkeepsie.
Data Note: The dots on the map do not reflect exact locations of people. Density is calculated by census tract, and the dots are distributed randomly within the tract. Each dot represents 10 people. Villages and Hamlets are labeled only where there is a census tract that aligns with its borders.
