October 2019 | Hudson Valley Out of Alignment Issue Brief
Regional Migration Trends
Just as employment and income tell us about a region’s economy, migration trends are also a gauge of its economic health. New York State loses more people to out-of-state migrations than any other state. This trend is also true in the Mid-Hudson Valley where large numbers of people move to destinations like Florida, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. While the Mid-Hudson Valley gains people from other parts of the state, especially New York City and Westchester County, people moving out to other states results in a net loss of residents. Though the net number of people leaving the Mid-Hudson Valley is small – 0.21 % of the population in 2016 – this loss reflects in part the high cost of living and lack of economic opportunities in the Mid-Hudson Valley.
